Effingham County, Georgia, celebrated its 4th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Observance Day Youth Program on Monday, January 15th, 2024. Mistress of Ceremony Mrs. Gladys Smalls set the tone for the program, guiding attendees through a day filled with meaningful reflections and inspiring performances. Dr. MLK, Jr Observance Day Choir graced the audience with soul-stirring melodies, creating an atmosphere of unity and reverence. The event featured scripture readings by 2nd Place Essay Winner (6-8) Kian Graham, whose eloquence brought Dr. King's words to life. The prayer was delivered by 3rd Place winner (9-12) Trenton White, adding a spiritual dimension to the program. The Pledge of Allegiance, a symbol of unity and patriotism, was read by one of the contest winners, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement and shared values. Michael A Garvin Jr welcomed attendees to the event, setting the stage for the impactful presentations that followed. Trevon Ivey, the 1st prize Essay winner, delivered a compelling Middle school Essay Presentation, while Hillary Smith, the High school essay presentation winner, shared insightful perspectives that resonated with the audience. The Hutchinson Longstreet Baptist Church Youth Department contributed a beautiful praise dance, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry that binds the community together. Their performance added a touch of grace and artistry to the program, reminding everyone of the power of expression through dance. The introduction of the keynote and motivational speaker, Ms. Carrie Davis, MRA of Davis Insurance Services LLC, was presented by South East Regional Vice-President Council of Prisons Mr. Lewis O. Davis Local 33. Ms. Davis's words echoed Dr. King's teachings, inspiring attendees to take action and make a positive impact in their communities. Awards were presented by the Dr. MLK Jr Education Committee, recognizing individuals and groups that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the principles of equality, justice, and service. The closing remarks were delivered by Rev. Lon Harden, leaving attendees with a sense of purpose and motivation to continue the work inspired by Dr. King. The heartwarming remarks from the grand marshals, The Mydells, added a personal touch to the event, highlighting the importance of community and solidarity. Talented Effigham youths were honored at the 37th Annual Youth Program for The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Observance Day. Students from elementary to high school participated in various disciplines from drawing and painting to writing essays pertaining to the positive achievements of Dr. King. The winners of each of the subject areas were honored with trophies as they were called to the stage at the Effingham Community Center not only to receive an award but also to speak publicly before a large audience. Parents, teachers, community leaders were all in attendance in support of the youth.
